Scientists from Nanchang University in China have identified a link between neuroticism and Meniere’s disease, a non-suppurative disease of the inner ear. Research results published In the journal Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (OHNS).
Meniere’s disease is an inner ear disease in which hearing is permanently reduced due to an increase in the amount of endolymph (a type of fluid) in the inner ear cavity. The study, in which 357,957 people participated, revealed that neuroticism (neuroticism) may be one of the causes of this disease. This is a mental condition characterized by emotional instability, anxiety, excitement, poor health and autonomic disorders.
The scientists first collected information about the participants’ mental health and then gave each of them magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the inner ear. The results showed that five subsets of neuroticism were associated with Meniere’s disease: feelings of loneliness, mood swings, mental fatigue and apathy, vulnerability, and lack of tolerance to stress. It has also been found that these aspects indirectly increase the risk of developing anxiety and depressive disorders.
