Plastic surgery for pets has become popular in China. He writes about a worrying trend SCMP.
Owners want their pets to look like Mickey Mouse, and animal activists are calling for an end to the practice due to the physical pain and psychological suffering it inflicts on animals.
That’s why a clinic in the city of Chongqing advertised “Mickey ears” for cats and dogs. They wanted 300 yuan, approximately 4 thousand rubles, for the operation. It is known that the animal whose owner wants to spend this amount for its transformation will first undergo tissue removal, which requires anesthesia and takes about half an hour. Surgeons will then work on shaping the new shell, which can take between 20 and 60 days. Your pet’s ears should remain in an upright position at all times.
“There are currently no legal restrictions on this operation in China. This is a moral issue,” explains a veterinarian from the Beijing medical center. He emphasized that the operation could lead to psychological trauma and other side effects.
“Damage to the natural structure of the ears can cause psychogenic problems in some pets. For example, some sensitive pets may constantly scratch their ears due to extreme pain,” echoes an employee at a veterinary clinic in Shenzhen.
Many internet users condemned this trend.
