Birth control pills for men that lower testosterone levels were developed by American experts at the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Eunice Kennedy Shriver. on this they said At the Annual Meeting of the Society of Endocrinologists in the United States.

The study included 96 healthy men. For 28 days, some took a placebo and some took the DMAU and 11-beta-MNTDC drugs, which reduced testosterone levels, which led to a reduction in sperm count. After a week, testosterone levels fell below normal in the participants who took the drug.

Even though lowering testosterone levels was fraught with side effects, 75% of study participants were willing to continue taking the drugs – apparently these side effects were acceptable to them.

“Currently, male birth control options are limited to vasectomy and condoms, with men having far fewer options than women. The development of an effective, reversible method of male contraception will improve the reproductive abilities of men and women, have a significant impact on public health by reducing the risk of unwanted pregnancy, and allow men to play an increasingly active role in family planning,” say the authors of the work.

Scientists hope that in the near future it will be possible to achieve a wider distribution of contraceptives for men.
