Experts from the GI Budker Institute for Nuclear Physics (BINP) SB RAS have developed a preliminary design of a new generation installation for studying plasma physics – the gas dynamics multiple mirror trap (GDML). writes about this TASS.

The installation will keep the plasma in a magnetic field, creating optimal conditions for the thermonuclear reaction. Physicists plan to reach plasma temperatures of 150 million degrees.

The creation of the GDML installation is planned for 2025-2030 and is estimated at 10.5 billion rubles.

Work at the facility is expected to help create a compact, economical and environmentally friendly fusion reactor based on open-type magnetic traps. The installation will combine the institute’s best advances in plasma physics and enable the use of pure deuterium and deuterium complexes along with helium and boron as alternative fuels. The length of the installation will be 30 meters, and the magnetic field will reach 1.5 Tesla in the center and 20 Tesla in traffic jams.
