Like every fruit, tangerine is a healthy product for children and adults. Especially in winter, the variety of vegetables and fruits offered in stores decreases. Daria Gubareva, a pediatric endocrinologist at SM-Clinic, told socialbites.ca.
“For example, 100 grams of tangerine (the weight of an average tangerine is approximately 100 grams) contains more than half of the daily vitamin C requirement we need for the proper functioning of the immune system and collagen synthesis; and about 10% of the dietary fiber we need. “Dietary fibers are nutritional components that the human body cannot fully digest, but they are necessary for the proper functioning of the digestive organs and also provide nutrition for the beneficial microorganisms that live in our intestines,” explained the doctor.
In addition, tangerine contains B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin), which are important for the development and functioning of cells; Vitamin E, which protects body cells from the damage of free radicals and acts as an antioxidant, is necessary for the protection of vascular health and the proper functioning of the immune system; Vitamin A, essential for vision, proper growth and development, and the immune system.
“Tangerine contains some important microelements as well as vitamins. For example, calcium, which is responsible for the density of our bones, also plays a role in muscle contraction and signal transmission in the nervous and muscular systems; Magnesium, which also plays a role in regulating the function of the nervous and muscular systems, affects protein production and bone density; Phosphorus is also stored in bones and teeth, helping them to become dense and strong, but phosphorus is also essential for energy production in the human body, and not a single process takes place without it,” said the doctor.
However, the content of these vitamins and microelements in tangerines is low. Most of these elements are found in one tangerine, providing 3-5% of the daily requirement.
“Still, although its benefits are indisputable, it is not recommended to consume more than 3-5 tangerines during the day. First of all, this fruit contains a fairly large amount of sugar, in addition, tangerines can cause discomfort in the gastrointestinal tract when consumed in large quantities. “Also, variety is very important for a balanced and healthy diet, which means consuming many different foods (including vegetables and fruits) rather than eating large amounts of a single product,” concluded Gubareva.
