Head of Rospotrebnadzor Anna Popova in an interview “Rossiyskaya Gazeta” He said whooping cough is very rarely detected in Russia.
“The problem is that whooping cough is not adequately detected in our country. “We can say that this is an undetected infection,” he said.
Popova added that when a child has a prolonged cough, parents often take him to an allergist to rule out bronchial asthma, but whooping cough must be ruled out first. She reminded that this disease can occur at any age.
According to the head of Rospotrebnadzor, only a few dozen cases of whooping cough have been detected in 2023. He also said that this infection is most severe in babies in the first months of life. To combat this, some countries use vaccination using the “cocoon” method, in which the entire environment of the newborn is vaccinated.
Popova reminded that in Russia, the vaccine against whooping cough is included in the national vaccination calendar, and if parents follow the calendar, outbreaks of this infection can be prevented.
