Scientists from the University of Nicosia (Cyprus) found that people often choose to remain single due to negative experiences in past romantic relationships. Research results published In Studia Psychologica (Stud Psy): Theoria et praxi.

377 women and 252 men with an average age of 36 participated in the study. The study was divided into two parts: assessing past relationship experiences and collecting demographic information. In the first phase, participants used a four-point scale to measure their level of satisfaction with their previous relationships. Subjects also provided information about whether they were lonely.

Participants were divided into several categories based on their self-reported attitudes toward romantic relationships. Categories were characterized by different definitions such as “married” or “married”, “single” or “single”, “prefers not to have a relationship”, “seeking”. Considering the voluntarily unmarried group, nearly 60% of respondents cited other life priorities as the reason. Other reasons for choosing celibacy include past disappointments with a partner (24%) and other reasons (17%).

A key finding was the significant impact of past relationship experiences on the decision to remain single. Those who reported feeling more frustration were more likely to choose loneliness. This effect was the same for both genders; This suggests the universal impact of past relationship trauma on future relationship status.
