Cave paintings discovered in Madagascar show the island’s connections with Ancient Egypt and the Asian island of Borneo. One of the authors of the find spoke about this Speech.

An international team of scientists has mapped a cave containing rock paintings discovered in Madagascar. They studied 72 rock art objects painted with black paint over several years. The images included 16 animals, six humans, two human-animal hybrid forms, two geometric designs, 16 M-shaped symbols, and a variety of other designs and blurry shapes.

Eight drawings show connections with Egypt. These include the falcon-headed god Horus, the ibis-headed god Thoth, and the feathered goddess Maat. The two painted figures resembled the dog-headed ancient Egyptian god Anubis.

Analysis of “M”-like symbols and other graffiti revealed that they may correspond to a letter of the ancient Amharic alphabet, pronounced “ha.” This means that Madagascar may have ties to the Ethiopian and Afro-Arab worlds. The same symbol appears in Borneo rock art dating back two thousand years, which also shows the connection between Madagascar and Borneo.

The drawings also depict animals from Madagascar that became extinct centuries ago: giant lemurs, elephant birds (rocs) and giant tortoises.

Scientists suggest that the discovered drawings are approximately two thousand years old, the same age as Cleopatra, or even older. But for now, historians can only speculate due to lack of data.

The people, language and culture of Madagascar were long believed to be based on the culture of the island of Borneo, despite being thousands of kilometers apart. A new study confirms this and explains signs of African and Asian influence in the culture of the Malagasy people living in Madagascar.
