A comprehensive study conducted by the conservation organization Mighty Earth through its deforestation monitoring program in the Amazon found that: beef products 50% of supermarkets in Brazil come from slaughterhouses owned by JBS, Marfrig and Minerva, companies responsible for the deforestation of more than half a million hectares in this threatened forest region.

This vast area (exceeds that of the Balearic Islands as a whole) shows how the consumption of meat and the animals required to obtain it affects the deforestation of tropical forests. However, the report does not analyze many other companies operating in the same industry that contribute to the deforestation of the Amazon by sending their products out of the country.

Mighty Earth, in collaboration with AidEnvironment, Used satellite images to identify deforestation. It has also used a new mobile phone application called ‘Do Pasto ao Prato’ (‘From pasture to plate’) to trace the origin of beef products sold on the shelves of Carrefour, Casino and Sendas supermarkets and to locate slaughterhouses across Brazil.

Area monitored in the study strong year

The new ‘Rapid Response’ surveillance program launched by this organization aims to monitor recent deforestation in livestock and soya supply chains in Brazil and proactively stop it in its early stages, warning and encouraging companies to stop trading with slaughterhouses and farms linked to the fires. or excavations.

Quick answer aims to prevent further environmental destruction and we will prevent the current deforestation of hundreds of hectares from increasing to thousands of hectares.

Key results

  • The report found that an area of 546,108 hectares, 156 times the size of Dubai, the headquarters of COP28, was deforested between 2009 and 2023. Farms supplying 36 slaughterhouses operated by JBS, Marfrig and Minerva in seven states of Brazil.

  • The analysis was based on a sample of 1,009 beef products recorded between July and September 2023 via the Do Pasto ao Prato mobile application at 71 Brazilian establishments owned by Carrefour, Casino/ Pão de Açúcar and Sendas/ Assaí, located in 27 Brazilian cities.

  • 13 of these deforestation-related slaughterhouses were identified as farms with the highest levels of deforestation. 10 of these slaughterhouses are owned by JBS, the world’s largest beef processor.

  • The total amount of deforestation detected in relation to direct and indirect agricultural suppliers of the three Brazilian meat companies is 94,258 hectares between 2021 and 2023. If exported, these meat products will not comply with the upcoming European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) standards. The law will ban the import of products derived from the illegal logging of Amazon forests and includes December 31, 2020 as a deadline for deforestation.

five studies

  • The report highlights five “real-time” studies of deforestation in the Amazon and Cerrado that were recently visually verified. These five studies identified 2,109 hectares of deforestation between May and October 2023 on farms commercially linked directly or indirectly to slaughterhouses that sell meat products to supermarkets in Brazil, including Carrefour, Casino (Pão de Açúcar) and Sendas (Assaí). ).

  • JBS did not respond to Mighty Earth regarding its connection to the five case studies cited in the report.

  • In one of the case studies analyzed, 1,489 hectares of Amazon rainforest were recently cleared at a single animal farm with business ties to JBS.

  • The report found that 13,940 hectares of natural vegetation remain on the five case study farms, possibly under threat of being converted to pasture for livestock.
