Physical therapy that focuses on the hips may reduce lower back pain more quickly than treatments that focus on the back. This has been shown by a study published in the journal. Lancet Rheumatology.
The study included 184 people randomly assigned to physical therapy targeting the hips or spine. The main method of treatment was education. After eight weeks, all participants showed an increase in walking speed. However, hip-focused physical therapy was more effective in relieving pain and related limitations in daily living, such as speed of getting up from a chair.
After six months, the results were nearly the same in both groups. This may mean that both types of therapy are effective, but focusing on the hip joints produces faster results.
The authors’ previous research found that lower back pain was associated with hip dysfunction in some people. New studies confirm this, and now it is important to find signs by which doctors can choose the most effective treatment: aimed at the lumbar or hip joints.
