The study examined a group of industrial chemicals called perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). These substances are known as “forever chemicals” because they do not biodegrade in the environment and can accumulate in the human body. Numerous studies have shown that these substances can increase the risk of many types of cancer. A new study by American scientists reports that PFOS and PFOA types found in special firefighting foams and many other products can stimulate cancer metastasis.
Scientists took samples of cancer cells from patients with colorectal carcinoma (colon cancer) and soaked them in a solution containing PFAS for seven days. It turns out that interaction with “infinite chemicals” stimulates the activity of cancer cells and triggers metabolic changes characteristic of cancer metastasis. Immersion in a solution containing PFOS and PFOA increased the ability of tumor cells to migrate.
In another experiment, researchers rolled cancer cells into a flat, two-dimensional layer and then split it in half. When PFAS was added, the cells in the two halves of the sample migrated towards each other and fused together.
People exposed to PFAS at work (such as firefighters) have a higher risk of developing cancer, the study authors noted. Scientists plan to continue research based on simulating the level of daily exposure to “eternal chemicals” among representatives of such professions.
