Phthalates are found in commonly used products such as shampoos, cosmetics, vinyl flooring, toys and medical devices. In the new study, researchers analyzed data from 1,228 women collected over the course of six menstrual cycles during which they were trying to get pregnant. They were then followed throughout the pregnancy.
The researchers measured levels of 20 phthalate metabolic products in urine samples taken from the participants. They found that three phthalates were most strongly associated with difficulty conceiving. But exposure to phthalates was generally harmful. Scientists suggest that this is due to decreased levels of the hormone estradiol and increased levels of follicle-stimulating hormone; The balance of these hormones is important for pregnancy. Changes in hormone levels in the participants’ blood were confirmed by analysis.
Scientists also found that women with the highest phthalate exposure had higher levels of C-reactive protein in their blood. This indicates inflammation, which can damage organs and tissues and increase the risk of various diseases.
