Although depression is common (affecting approximately 20% of the world’s population), it is difficult to diagnose. The truth is that there is no single tool to identify this disease. Doctors often use a comprehensive approach based on the patient’s own report of their symptoms, completion of various questionnaires, and observations, Hellewell explained. A variety of treatment options are available for those already diagnosed with depression, including talk therapy, medication, and lifestyle changes. However, it is difficult to predict response to treatment.
It is stated that in recent years, researchers’ interest in methods of diagnosing depression using artificial intelligence has increased. Citing a study by scientists from Oranim Academic College in Israel, Hellewell said that artificial intelligence models not only detect this disease effectively but also provide adequate recommendations for treatment.
In the study, researchers used ChatGPT, a bot based on a neural network model, to generate depression treatment recommendations for fictitious patients with varying degrees of illness severity, gender, and socioeconomic status. In many cases, the AI-based chatbot offered “subjects” to undergo a course of conversational psychotherapy.
Hellewell explained that sometimes doctors ignore this treatment in favor of using antidepressants. The drugs are prescribed mostly to working-class men. The use of AI models as primary diagnostic tools has the potential to reduce gender and socioeconomic biases that can affect the quality of treatment. But since such technologies are still imperfect, it is impossible to do without consulting a doctor.
