In the new study, doctors examined a total of more than 120,000 cells from kidney biopsy samples from 17 patients with acute kidney failure and seven healthy participants. Six specific proteins associated with maladaptive renal proximal tubular repair were identified in patients. This process is accompanied by severe inflammation, and its identification using the proteins the scientists discovered will allow for a better prognosis and treatment of acute kidney failure.

“Patients with acute kidney failure are often critically ill in the intensive care unit, and kidney biopsies are not possible due to safety concerns.
