Physical activity helps increase the size of areas in the brain that are important for memory and learning. This study showed published In the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease (JAD).
Scientists analyzed MRI images of the brains of 10 thousand people. They found that regular physical activity (walking, running, or fitness) was associated with greater volume of gray and white matter as well as the hippocampus. Gray matter is crucial for processing information, white matter connects different regions of the brain, and the hippocampus plays a central role in the formation of memories.
“We found that even moderate physical activity, such as walking fewer than four thousand steps a day, can have a positive impact on brain health. This is much less than the often recommended 10,000 steps, making this goal more achievable for many people,” said study co-author David Merrill. MD.
The study supports other studies showing the benefits of physical activity to the brain and prevention of dementia.
