The sugar D-mannose reduced the susceptibility of aged mice to urinary tract infections. This was shown by a study published in the journal Science by scientists from Baylor College of Medicine. Developmental Cell.
The authors of the new study examined autophagy, which refers to the digestion of old and defective cellular structures. They found that this process naturally slows down as the cells lining the urinary tract age. As a result, toxic wastes and reactive oxygen species can accumulate in cells and cause tissue damage. In this case, an inflammatory process develops that leads to the loss of cells in the urinary tract.
Further studies showed that dietary supplementation containing D-mannose sugar improved autophagy, reduced reactive oxygen species levels, and reduced urinary tract cell loss in aged mice. The results suggest that age-related tissue dysfunction may explain the higher prevalence of urinary tract infections (urethritis and cystitis) in the elderly.
