Researchers from Jeonbuk and Chung-Ang Universities in South Korea found that the nectarine B compound in coconut can extend the lifespan of fruit flies. results published In Aging magazine.

As a result of an experiment conducted on fruit flies, it was revealed that eating coconut can extend their lifespan. Experimental insects were divided into five groups. Insects in the first group consumed 50 ml of rapamycin in addition to the standard diet based on cornmeal from the first days of their lives. The second group was given 200 ml of this substance. The third is 50 ml of another compound called NecB. The insects in the fourth group consumed 200 ml of NecB, and the insects in the fifth group consumed only corn flour.

NecB, known as Nectandrin B, is a bioactive phenolic compound found in coconut. Rapamycin is a substance used in medicine to prevent organ rejection during transplantation. There is an opinion that its effect is associated with an increase in life expectancy.

The results of the experiment showed that the highest life expectancy in fruit flies in the NecB-200 group was in females and males. Females lived for 76 days, males for 74 days, male insects in the control group lived for 61 days, and female insects for 65 days. Additionally, the NecB compound was able to improve musculoskeletal function and slow the progression of visual impairment and neurodegeneration in aging fruit flies.

Scientists hope that further investigation of nectarine B will lead to the development of strategies to use it as a potential therapeutic agent to extend lifespan and combat age-related changes in humans.
