Scientists from the State University of Campinas (Brazil) found that drinking coke oil was associated with weight gain and the development of insulin resistance in mice. Research results published In the Journal of Functional Foods.
To find out whether consuming coconut oil daily over a long period of time could cause health problems, the research team conducted an experiment on healthy mice. The first group of rodents consumed the equivalent of one tablespoon (13 grams) of coconut oil for an adult each day for eight weeks. The second group of animals served as controls.
At the end of the experiment, it was revealed that cocaine oil caused hormonal changes, weight gain and brain inflammation in the first group of mice. In particular, fat caused disruptions in the mechanisms that enable the key metabolic hormones leptin and insulin to regulate satiety and blood sugar levels. In addition, fat contributed to a more intense synthesis of adipose tissue in the bodies of animals and the emergence of insulin resistance in them.
This pathology is characterized by the inability of body cells to respond to insulin. Insulin cannot transport glucose into cells and it accumulates in the blood. This can lead to the development of diabetes.
It is noted that the researchers are not urging people to stop consuming coconut oil. The daily dose of the product should be selected by a nutritionist and should be small. Plus, coconut oil isn’t the only source of healthy fats.
