According to Richard Fuchs, food safety expert at the University of Greenwich (UK), moldy hard cheeses are safe to consume. But soft cheeses, nuts, fruits and grains are dangerous even if visible mold is removed. In this respect reports Daily mail.

Nuts, grains, and apples with traces of mold are the most dangerous when eaten. Fuchs explained that mold can produce compounds called mycotoxins. They can form in many food products during storage under the influence of microscopic fungi that grow inside them. These substances can suppress the body’s immune system, promote the development of respiratory diseases and reduce fertility. In particular, such consequences are associated with aflatoxin exposure. It is produced by two types of mold: Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus. They can be found in spoiled nuts, rice, spices, vegetable oils and cocoa beans.

The expert noted that cutting away visible mold can make only one type of food edible: hard cheeses. The fact is that the hard texture prevents mold spores from penetrating deeper. It is recommended to discard part of the moldy cheese with a margin of 2.5 centimeters. Soft cheeses cannot be “refreshed” using this method. Due to its loose texture, mold quickly spreads over the entire surface of the product, even if it is not visible to the eye.
