Small lifestyle improvements can reduce the risk of life-threatening hip fracture by 45%. The study was published on: Journal of Bone and Mineral Research (JBMR).

Approximately 37% of men and 20% of women die within a year due to hip fracture. Additionally, this injury causes severe pain, loss of mobility and independence in daily living. Osteoporosis is a disease that causes bones to become brittle. People with osteoporosis have the highest risk of hip fracture, but pharmacological treatment can reduce this risk by approximately 50%. However, most hip fractures occur in people who do not have this condition.

The authors analyzed data from one of the longest osteoporosis studies in the world. More than three thousand patients over the age of 60 participated. Scientists have tracked fractures among patients for a long time. They found that increasing average bone mineral density by just 3% led to a 45% reduction in hip fractures. This was true for both patients with and without osteoporosis.

Scientists noted that quitting smoking, maintaining moderate physical activity and eating a healthy diet help reduce bone loss. The study found that small changes can significantly reduce the risk of hip fracture. Therefore, all elderly people, including those without osteoporosis, need to take steps to improve bone health.
