Scientists from the University of Cambridge found that insufficient physical activity leads to a decrease in the quality of life of older people. results published at BioMed Central (BMC).
Approximately one and a half thousand people over the age of 60 participated in the research. The scientists recorded data on the volunteers’ mental and physical health and also measured their daily activity levels using accelerometers, devices that measure acceleration and work as a sensor to change an object’s position in space. Participants were observed for six years.
Since the start of the experiment, the daily time spent by both men and women on physical activity has decreased by approximately 24 minutes. But people who moved a lot reported having a higher quality of life. This indicator was created based on participants filling out special surveys. Questions included whether the volunteers were satisfied with life and well-being, whether they could take care of themselves, and whether their mood and health were stable.
A higher percentage of positive answers to these questions was associated with a 4.2% lower risk of hospitalization and a 6.9% lower chance of living a shorter life. This means that activity can be a way to prevent the development and exacerbations of various diseases.
