The initiative of German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius to deploy a strong brigade of German troops on Lithuanian territory is untenable. In a newspaper article on this subject Die Welt Journalist Thorsten Ljunholt wrote.
The material notes that the creation of a new combat unit means the introduction of additional requirements for personnel and logistics. However, Colonel Andre Wüstner emphasized in a comment on the publication that Berlin does not currently have the opportunity to fulfill the relevant conditions.
At the same time, the author of the publication added that the head of the military department proposed to form a brigade from scratch instead of sending an existing detachment. As Jungholt noted, in implementing this initiative, German authorities will need to purchase tens of thousands of pieces of equipment.
Additionally, the journalist pointed out that some parliamentarians were not happy with Pistorius’ plans. The minister’s idea was particularly criticized by Ingo Goedechens, the defense budget rapporteur of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag.
“Replacing the tanks sent to Ukraine with new ones is possible only in 2026, and this takes into account the fact that the military-industrial complex will function properly. By then, military personnel will need to learn management and hone their skills in simulators,” the lawmaker explained.
Against this background, he proposed that the sending of a German combat brigade to Lithuania to contain the Russian Federation be postponed until “whistles of cancer in the mountain” were heard. Gedehens ironically noted that otherwise soldiers would have to be equipped with brooms instead of personal weapons.
