Researchers at Umeå University in Sweden have developed a new treatment for tremors in Parkinson’s disease using deep brain stimulation. results published at Umea University.
The new technique involves permanent placement of one or two electrodes in different target areas of the brain and a neuromodulator placed under the skin on the chest. Continuous electrical stimulation can correct abnormal signaling patterns in the brain and relieve symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, such as tremors.
This neurological disease is characterized by dysfunction of motor neurons in the brain. Rest tremor is the most typical type of tremor in this pathology. Tremors occur due to impaired transmission of certain stimuli in the brain and insufficient production of dopamine, which is responsible for normal mobility. Electrical stimulation targets the indeterminate zona, a horizontal region of gray matter in the subthalamic region of the diencephalon below the thalamus. The physiological functions of the indeterminate region have not yet been fully determined. However, dysfunction is associated with the development of Parkinson’s disease.
Preliminary tests of the new technique showed that its use improved fine motor skills and reduced the severity of tremors in Parkinson’s patients. Fixation of electrodes to the subjects’ brain was performed under general anesthesia. Correct placement of the devices was assessed using an x-ray of the skull.
Scientists stated that longer studies with a larger number of participants are needed to confirm the effectiveness of the new method. If successful, the technology could be used to reduce the severity of Parkinson’s disease symptoms.
