Researchers from the University of Queensland in Australia found that being overweight may weaken the body’s immune response to SARS-CoV-2 infection. results published Clinical and Translational Immunology (CTI).

The research team collected blood samples from people who recovered from COVID-19 and did not become reinfected during their follow-up (the next 13 months). Scientists sought to determine the relationship between body mass index (BMI), weight for height, and the intensity of the immune response to SARS-CoV-2. It turns out that high BMI (overweight) leads to impaired production of antibodies against coronavirus.

Antibody activity decreased in overweight people who were ill three months before the study began. In addition, excess fat mass has been associated with an insufficient number of B cells expressing the necessary antibodies (IgA, IgM, and IgG) in the blood. This means that people with higher BMI are susceptible to re-infection with coronavirus.

However, scientists noted that any BMI indicator did not affect the effectiveness of the vaccine.
