Scientists from Staffordshire University discovered that using gaming technology in sports training can change the perception of fatigue. This is dangerous for people with type 1 diabetes because it can cause dangerously low blood sugar levels. The research was published in the journal Bodywork and Movement.
In a new study, patients with type 1 diabetes completed two 30-minute moderate-intensity exercises. One of the groups is running, the second is “Kinect Adventures!” He was completing missions in the video game. After exercise, patients were evaluated for fatigue using the Borg scale (6 to 20 points). They also measured heart rates and tissue oxygen consumption. It turns out that training in the format of video games leads to a deterioration in the subjective assessment of fatigue. This means that the Borg scale is not suitable for use in active video games.
Although gaming of mild to vigorous intensity may benefit people with type 1 diabetes, patients need to closely monitor their health to prevent dangerously low blood sugar levels.
