Doing squats for a minute periodically can protect the brain from the negative effects of sitting for long periods of time. The study was published on: Journal of Applied Physiology.
Previous research has shown that the brain’s executive functions, which are responsible for planning, concentrating, remembering and completing tasks, can be damaged by prolonged sitting.
The authors of the new study conducted an experiment involving healthy adult volunteers. The first group sat for three hours without a break, while the second group took a break every 20 minutes and did shallow squats for about a minute.
Participants in the no-break group reported a greater decrease in concentration. Blood flow in the carotid artery, which provides oxygen to the brain, decreased by 3.7% in the constantly sitting group. Carotid blood flow in squatting volunteers showed a slight increase (0.3%). In addition, squats improved participants’ executive functions: their reaction times were faster and they completed the route-finding test faster.
