Scientists from Oklahoma State University (USA) have discovered that weight loss medications such as Ozempic can help combat alcohol addiction (AD). Research results published In Psychiatrist.

Ozempic and Vegovi are known to be effective in helping people lose weight and keep their blood sugar levels under control. These medications contain semaglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist that reduces hunger, slows gastric emptying, and increases insulin response.

Some people noted that while taking it, their appetite not only for high-calorie foods but also for alcohol decreased. American scientists decided to find out whether this was related to the active ingredient of the drugs. They conducted a study with six participants who had alcohol addiction and were using semaglutide-based medications.

Observation of participants revealed that taking such medications actually reduced symptoms of alcohol addiction. At the end of the study, subjects completed the AUDIT, a test designed to screen for alcohol use disorders. On average, participants scored 9.5 points lower than before treatment (higher scores indicate more severe Alzheimer’s symptoms).

The study authors noted that their study may be a first step in developing potential therapeutic uses of semaglutide in the field of addiction.
