Parkinson’s disease increases the risk of coronary heart disease. The research was published in the journal Scientific Reports.

Scientists used Mendelian randomization to examine causal links between Parkinson’s disease (PD) and cardiovascular diseases. To do this, they evaluated whether there was a correlation between PD-associated mutations and vascular disease. This approach allows you to check the presence of cause-effect relationships, excluding the influence of the environment and lifestyle.

A study in 482,730 Europeans identified 23 genetic mutations associated with PD. The analysis found that Parkinson’s disease is associated with an increased risk of coronary heart disease. However, no connection was found between Parkinson’s disease and other cardiovascular diseases (heart attack, arrhythmia, stroke).

Scientists believe that the buildup of special structures called Lewy bodies in the brains of Parkinson’s patients may lead to disruption of the heart’s neural regulation. Tremors, movement disorders, dementia and depression aggravate severe heart failure. Additionally, other studies have shown that Parkinson’s disease is associated with an increased risk of stroke due to abnormalities in the metabolism of the alpha-synuclein protein. The new study means it is critical to provide early screening and treatment for stroke and coronary heart disease in PD patients.
