Hemoglobin glycation index is a previously unknown risk factor for the development of chronic kidney disease. This is reported by the authors of a published study. Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism (JCEM).

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a progressive, irreversible decrease in the filtration capacity of the kidneys and can lead to kidney failure. This condition was previously known as chronic kidney failure. In the new study, researchers used data from 23,467 people without CKD. They were followed for an average of five years. CKD developed in 2540 patients.

Low glomerular filtration rate was the strongest blood parameter associated with CKD risk. The second most reliable risk factor was high glycosylated hemoglobin. The researchers also took other factors into account, such as age and systolic blood pressure.

“Until now, we have had only limited tools to predict the development of CKD in people who do not suffer from common risk factors, including diabetes and hypertension,” the study authors said.
