A team of scientists from the University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has concluded that corruption can benefit developing economies by increasing environmental efficiency and economic performance. The study was published in the scientific journal magazine Journal of Cleaner Production (JCP).

The paper presents a new approach to Bayesian data envelopment analysis (DEA) to examine environmental performance in 144 countries, 35 of which are developed and the remaining 109 developing.

The authors analyzed the relationships between official institutions in states, taking into account variables such as voice and accountability, political stability, absence of violence, government performance, regulatory quality, rule of law, and control of corruption. According to researchers, a country’s developed or developing status plays an important role in its level of environmental performance.

Research author Dr. “Corruption can facilitate economic activity and improve environmental performance in countries with weak institutions,” said Panagiotis Zervopoulos.

The scientist called for this result not to be seen as an excuse for corruption, adding that the quality of control over the environmental situation is higher in developed countries due to well-functioning institutions. However, where these institutions are not sufficiently developed, corruption can contribute to environmental protection.
