Meat eaters are characterized by character traits such as isolation and flexibility, while vegans are characterized by openness and agreeableness. This conclusion was reached by scientists from the University of Zurich in Switzerland. Research results published on ScienceDirect.

To isolate the factors that motivate people to adopt vegetarian and vegan diets, scientists analyzed 17 studies examining the role of certain personality traits in dietary choices. The scientific team tried to determine which character traits are inherent in meat eaters and which are specific to vegans.

Approximately 70 thousand people from different countries of the world, including Germany, the USA and New Zealand, participated in the research. They used a questionnaire called the Big Five, in which researchers assessed participants’ openness, agreeableness, neuroticism, conscientiousness, and extraversion (the ability to enjoy social interactions).

It turns out that vegans and vegetarians are more likely to show openness than meat-eaters. It also turned out that adherents of this type of nutrition are more flexible and adaptable. Meat eaters, on the other hand, were characterized by traits such as isolation and stubbornness. It is stated that the research does not reveal consistent relationships between neuroticism, extraversion, conscientiousness and eating style.
