On average, people living in Russia visit offline markets 16 times a month. Tuesday and Friday were the busiest days for offline grocery shopping. This is shown by a study by Tinkoff Magazine, the results of which were reviewed by socialbites.ca.

The majority of trips to the store (80.5%) end at the first store. Nearly one in five trips includes shopping at at least two or more stores. Nearly one in five trips includes shopping at at least two or more stores.

During grocery shopping, 15% visit two markets, 3.3% visit three markets, and 1.2% visit four or more markets.

Elderly people shop approximately one and a half times more actively than young people. For example, among Russians aged 61-70, the share of visits to two or more retail outlets is 26%. And among young people aged 21-30 – about 16-17%.

People often visit more than one store at the same time on weekends: between 10.00 and 19.00, the share of trips involving more than one store exceeds 20%.

During the week, people spend more time shopping on Tuesdays and Fridays. During the week, intense activity takes place between 16.00 and 19.00. The share of trips to two or more stores between 01.00-03.00 is higher between 05.00-08.00. It can be assumed that people tend to limit themselves to a single store in the early morning hours before work.

The average monthly amount spent on grocery shopping was 8,400 rubles per customer, and the average bill for a trip in January-September 2023 was 525 rubles. Moreover, from Friday to Sunday such expenses are higher: the maximum figure is 610 rubles, on Saturday and on Friday and Sunday – about 560 rubles.

The average bill for purchases in a store in September 2023 was 426 rubles; this was 4.4% less than a year ago. Considering that the number of transactions is increasing, we can say that buyers are more likely to split a single voucher into multiple purchases in different markets. They are also increasingly choosing marketplaces, ready-made food and grocery delivery services over traditional offline stores.

The check in the North Caucasus is significantly higher than the national average: in Chechnya, North Ossetia and Dagestan – from 550 rubles. Residents of Moscow and remote regions spend similar amounts in stores at the same time: Magadan and Murmansk regions, Kamchatka Territory, Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.

In Mari El, Udmurtia, Chuvashia, as well as the Perm Territory and Tyva, the average bill does not exceed 330 rubles.
