Scientists from RUDN University have found that in case of severe liver damage, the spleen helps suppress inflammation and thus promotes liver regeneration. The research was published in the journal Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology.

The immune system plays an important role in liver healing; part of it is the spleen, which is connected directly to the liver via the portal vein. However, the exact mechanism of their interaction was unknown. In the new study, scientists removed 70% of the liver of mice to examine changes in the spleen.

Just one day after surgery, the number of immune cells, macrophages, and monocytes decreased in the spleen, indicating that they had migrated to the liver. At the same time, genes responsible for the synthesis of serine protease inhibitors became more active. These enzymes are involved in the regulation of many processes, including the suppression of the inflammatory response.

“The direct anatomical connection of the liver and spleen enables these organs to mount a coordinated response to infection, trauma, toxic and other types of damage. This interaction is based not only on the general blood circulation between them, but also on their common barrier and immune functions,” explained Medical Sciences His doctor is Andrey Elchaninov, Head of the Experimental Morphology Laboratory of the Research Institute of Molecular and Cellular Medicine.
