Scientists from the University of Barcelona found that inflammation in the body caused by vitamin B12 deficiency increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, diabetes and neurodegenerative disorders. Research results published In Journal of Food and Agricultural Science (SOCI).
Vitamin B12 is an important nutrient involved in various physiological processes in the body. This vitamin is of great importance for general health. Its deficiency may be the result of inadequate nutrition (adherence to vegetarianism, veganism) or ineffective absorption.
Researchers from Spain found that B12 deficiency is associated with increased levels of two inflammatory markers in the body: interleukin (IL)-6 and C-reactive protein (CRP). Scientists explained that chronic inflammation is associated with the risk of a wide range of diseases, including diabetes, neurodegenerative disorders, heart attack and hypertension. It also turns out that the more vitamin B12 a person has in their body, the lower their symptoms of inflammation. This is called inverse dependency.
Scientists hope their work will bring us closer to understanding the mechanisms of neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s disease. Scientists now plan to continue research to determine whether chronic inflammation in the body is associated with obesity and irritable bowel syndrome.
