Scientists from Oregon Health and Science University found that obese people burn less energy during the day and more at night, while those at a healthy weight do the opposite. The research was published in the journal Obesity.

30 obese people participated in the experiment. They were in a laboratory specially created for the study of circadian (daily) rhythms for six days, while their sleep and wakefulness schedules were constantly changed. In all graphs, obese people burned more calories at night than during the day. To monitor calorie consumption, a calorimeter was used, which determines energy consumption by the amount of exhaled carbon dioxide. The study also found that obese people had higher levels of the hormone insulin. This means their bodies have a harder time processing glucose.

Previous studies have shown that people of normal weight spend more energy during the day. Scientists don’t know what causes the differences they discover. Burning less energy throughout the day may contribute to or be a result of obesity. To assess overweight or underweight, the BMI indicator is used – body mass index. To calculate this, you need to divide your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in meters. A BMI over 30 is considered a sign of obesity. Being overweight or obese increases your risk of hypertension, cancer and type 2 diabetes.
