The study authors analyzed data from six studies involving 15,246 people from five countries. Each patient used a wearable hip device to measure activity 24 hours a day.

Using data from people’s activity and cardiovascular health, scientists modeled how changing movement habits can affect health. It turns out that with a sedentary lifestyle, just five minutes of moderate activity a day significantly improves heart function. The most useful substitute for sitting was moderate-to-vigorous intensity activity: running, brisk walking, or climbing stairs. It is important that movement increases heart rate and breathing. It was also observed that heart health was better in people who slept more during the day. This may mean that even sleeping is healthier than sitting. But scientists suggest that sleeping longer leaves less time for unhealthy snacks, which explains the results.

Scientists emphasized that longer activity leads to better results. For example, for a 54-year-old, slightly overweight woman, doing moderate to vigorous exercise instead of sitting or lying for 30 minutes per day can result in a 2.5 cm (2.7%) reduction in waist circumference and a 1.33 mmol reduction in waist circumference. glycated hemoglobin levels/mol (3.6%).
