Scientists from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (WNLO) found that eating hazelnuts reduces the risk of death in type 2 diabetes. The study was published on: Nutrition Journal.

The study authors analyzed data from participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999–2014). During the follow-up of 35,632 patients, 1,174 deaths were recorded. Eating more nuts was associated with a reduced risk of all-cause death in people with type 2 diabetes. Moreover, the more hazelnuts a person eats, the lower the risk. The scientists also made adjustments for lifestyle, diet, duration of diabetes and glycated hemoglobin levels.

Substituting one serving of red and processed meats, refined grains, eggs or dairy for one serving of nuts was associated with an 18% to 22% reduction in the risk of all-cause death. The effect of nuts may be due to the reduction of inflammation in the body. It was evaluated using C-reactive protein levels in the blood. Inflammation is common in people with type 2 diabetes and is a risk factor for heart disease and cancer.
