Scientists from the University of Maine (UMaine) found that eating broccoli sprouts or other types of kale early in life may protect against inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The research was published in the journal mSystems.

Biologists conducted an experiment on mice with human IBD, a model of Crohn’s disease. They found that feeding mice a diet supplemented with broccoli sprouts reduced the risk of intestinal inflammation.

Adding broccoli sprouts to the diet reduced the risk of severe intestinal inflammation in all mice, but was most effective at four to six weeks of age, during childhood. This group of animals had the mildest disease symptoms and the richest microbial communities in their guts.

A higher concentration of the anti-inflammatory substance sulforaphane was found in the intestines of experimental mice, protecting them from serious symptoms of the disease: weight loss, blood in the stool and diarrhea. Scientists believe that broccoli sprouts, which are easy to grow yourself, may also be beneficial for IBD patients.
