In the homes of people using gas stoves, air levels of nitrogen dioxide, a dangerous chemical compound, exceed levels recommended by the World Health Organization. In this respect reports Daily mail.
Gas stoves are used in many countries – France, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Romania and Slovakia. This cooking method is convenient and economical. However, Dutch researchers found that using a gas stove increased the concentration of nitrogen dioxide in the air. It is a chemical compound with the formula NO2.
Scientists from the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research found that the longer the stove is used, the higher the NO2 level. Additionally, exhaust ventilation systems cannot effectively remove such compounds (most likely due to their improper use).
Nitrogen dioxide is particularly toxic and is a strong oxidizing agent. Even in small concentrations the compound can irritate the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract. Inhaling nitrogen dioxide can trigger the development of inflammatory airway diseases such as asthma. Symptoms may get worse in people with breathing problems.
British scientists who were not involved in the research said people using gas stoves were not sufficiently aware of the dangers. They believe that manufacturers of such devices should warn about potential air pollution through special labeling. Health experts recommend using gas stoves only if they have a good ventilation system or switching to all-electric options.
