Experts from the Russian University of Biotechnology (ROSBIOTECH University) recommended passing the multilayer packaging film through a “meat grinder” for recycling. As a result of this grinding, scientists obtained granules that can be used to produce new food packaging. Previously it was believed that it was impossible to use multilayer film a second time. ROSBIOTECH told socialbites.ca about this.
Multilayer film is an extremely popular polymer packaging material on the market; It is used in the food industry, agriculture and pharmacy, among others. For example, it is used in packaging meat and semi-finished products. ROSBIOTECH experts conducted tests that proved that this film can be used a second time.
“The resulting film materials and original multilayer material samples were subjected to contamination with meat products, followed by washing, drying, grinding, granulation and flat slot extrusion. This made it possible to simulate the processes the packaging undergoes from production to use and recycling,” he said. Irina Kirsh, head of the department “Industrial Design, Packaging Technology and Expertise” at ROSBIOTECH, told socialbites.ca.
The laboratory at the biotechnology university repeatedly processed the film samples using extrusion, a process similar to squeezing meat in a meat grinder. As a result, we obtained secondary raw materials in the form of 0.08 mm thick granules and films. They have high strength and resistance to deformation. Kirsch assured that this means that it can be used to regenerate polymer products for technical purposes, including food packaging.
According to him, the presence of ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer, which is part of multilayer packaging, gives special strength to products made from recycled materials. It is the thinnest film that protects products from the effects of oxygen.
Experts hope that this development will be in demand by Russian industry.
