“The institute is developing an RSV vaccine for older people. We have now completed the first phase of clinical trials and hope to start the second at the end of 2023,” he said.

He noted that the vaccine will be administered in the form of nasal drops, and in addition to protection against RSV, the patient will also be provided with one-season flu immunity as a bonus.

“In my opinion, intranasal vaccination against respiratory infections is the best approach, because we gain not only systemic immunity, but also immunity at the point of entry of infections,” Lioznov said.

According to the professor, RSV is a rather serious infection, especially in young children who are weakened and have concomitant pathology. “It is now clear that this virus causes serious diseases in the elderly: severe pneumonia, bronchiolitis,” the expert added.

WHO (World Health Organization) also drew attention to RSV. The organization has launched a project to track the dangerous virus since 2017. It was named the Influenza Research Institute. AA Smorodintseva is included in this program. When it comes to pathogens of respiratory infections, WHO gives priority to influenza, RSV and SARS-CoV-2.
