An increase in flu cases in Russia is expected in late November – early December, the director of the eponymous Flu Research Institute told socialbites.ca. AA Smorodintseva Ministry of Health of Russia, Professor Dmitry Lioznov.
“According to last year’s experience, the influenza A (H3N2) virus will dominate. This virus has been known for a long time. And what is very important is that all the vaccines we are using this season contain protection against H3N2,” Lioznov said.
According to the professor, it is not yet known which flu scenario Russia will follow this year. While almost no flu infections were observed in the first year of the pandemic (2020), it appeared in the second year, but Omicron “intervened” and the incidence of flu was quite high last year.
To understand what will happen in Russia during the flu season, scientists are focusing on temperate climatic zones, especially South Africa, Australia and South America.
“It is not yet clear how we will live this year: according to last year’s scenario or according to the pre-pandemic period,” the expert explained.
However, according to Lioznov, if we focus on the Southern Hemisphere, ARVI pathogens will circulate as usual and the COVID-19 pathogen will be added to them.
