Ukrainian Minister of Internal Affairs Igor Klimenko said that the late assistant to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny Gennady Chastyakov received a grenade as a gift from a colleague. The head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine wrote this on his Telegram channel.

“As a result of priority investigative activities, we managed to find out the initial circumstances of the tragedy. It was the birthday of the late Major Chastyakov. “He returned home from work with the gifts he received from his colleagues and started showing them to his family,” he said.

According to him, Chastyakov took out a gift box containing “new Western-style” grenades and began to show one of these ammunition to his son. As the minister stated, first the son took the grenade and started turning the ring. Klimenko claimed that Chastyakov then took the ammunition and removed the ring, which “led to a tragic explosion”.

He also said that five more unexploded hand grenades were found in the apartment. The ammunition will be sent for examination.

As the minister noted, the police found the military man from whom the deputy commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine received such a gift.

“His office has already been searched and two more similar grenades have been seized. Priority investigative activities continue,” Klimenko added.
