Michael Muesli, a British nutritionist and author of books on healthy eating, said consuming too much fructose can lead to obesity. In this respect reports Daily mail.
Many people know that excess sugar in the diet causes excess weight. However, the harmful effects of fructose are often underestimated. This monosaccharide is considered “healthy” because it does not raise blood sugar levels as quickly as glucose. Many people with diabetes are advised to replace refined sugar with fructose powder.
Nutritionist Muesli said fructose can increase hunger. This conclusion was reached by scientists from the University of Colorado School of Medicine in the USA. Excessive consumption of this monosaccharide can cause a person to lose appetite control and eat more foods, including sugar-free ones. This leads to more calorie intake into the body. A constant excess of calories is stored as lipids, a layer of subcutaneous fat deposits.
Typically, nutrients are broken down and absorbed in the intestines and then converted into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a compound that body cells use as their main energy source. However, American scientists say that consuming too much fructose suppresses ATP production. When ATP levels decrease, areas in the human brain responsible for stimulating appetite are activated.
