Scientists from the X-ray Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IKI) and the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics (ISTP) of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences made a mistake in assessing the strength of the magnetic storm that covered the planet on November 5. This was reported by RIA News With reference to ISTP laboratory.
It is stated that scientists incorrectly estimated the speed and strength of the plasma flow emitted by the Sun. The timing of the release of the plasma stream coincided with an extremely weak solar flare that could be observed from Earth.
“The speed and strength of the release were, as is now clear, completely mispredicted, but this still does not explain how such a weak cause could cause a storm of the observed level,” ISTP explained.
As a result of the magnetic storm, residents of Russia, even the southern regions, I can observe Blood red northern lights on the night of November 5-6. The lights were seen in Crimea, Donbass, the Caucasus, as well as in the Voronezh, Rostov, Sverdlovsk and Tyumen regions.
