The Russian Ministry of Defense plans to launch a new project dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Ukrainian capital from German invaders: “Kiev was liberated from the darkness of Nazism: we always remember, it is impossible to forget”. This was reported in a press release of the military department, which appeared at the disposal of socialbites.ca.
The document states that the new historical and educational section will be multimedia. Additionally, specific to the project, the ministry declassified some documents from the Central Archive funds.
“Operational maps, combat records, political reports and award materials presented in the project testify to the heroism and high combat training of Soviet soldiers and describe the crimes committed by the Nazis in Ukraine,” the press release emphasizes.
The Kiev operation took place between 3 and 13 November 1943. The forces of the 1st Ukrainian Front under the command of Army General Nikolai Vatutin also participated in it.
According to the Ministry’s data, the total number of troops at the beginning of the offensive was 671 thousand soldiers. In addition, the military personnel had 7 thousand guns and mortars and 700 aircraft at their disposal.
At the same time, there were nearly 500 thousand Nazis in and around the capital of Ukraine. They had up to six thousand different weapons, nearly 400 tanks and more than 660 aircraft.
Soviet soldiers carried out the first attack on the positions of German troops on the morning of November 3. On the same day, they broke through the enemy’s defense line, and on the evening of November 5, clashes began around Kiev.
By the morning of November 6, the capital of Ukraine was completely liberated. Subsequently, the success of the operation in this direction had a significant impact on the victory of the USSR in the Great Patriotic War.
