According to SpyTalk sources, the Israeli military is actively using drone-mounted hyperspectral cameras to detect Hamas’ underground tunnels. These cameras make it possible to see, among other things, carbon dioxide released during breathing or explosive vapors leaking from the tunnel. “Increased levels of carbon dioxide or explosive molecules in the air can actually be detected using a camera that can capture images across a broad spectrum, including infrared, visible and ultraviolet. Hyperspectral cameras were created for exactly this, but their functionality will be greatly limited when shooting from a drone in field conditions “Since only a small fraction of the air people breathe and vapors from explosives seep into the ground, their sensitivity is unlikely to be sufficient to draw a definitive conclusion about whether there is a tunnel under this patch of ground,” Pozhar said.
Thus, the drone operator will see many points on the ground in front of him and without additional information will not be able to understand which of them is due to natural fluctuations or image noise, and which is due to the tunnel below. “Even if tunnel traces appear during multispectral imaging in the form of low-contrast spots that are indistinguishable in noise, then it will be possible to search the system at their location. If they form chains (dotted lines), it’s hardly a coincidence. “If this dotted line goes in a straight line and even intersects other similar dotted lines, then most likely what is ahead of us is not noise, but a tunnel system,” he said.
