A US federal appeals court has temporarily lifted a ban on former President Donald Trump from speaking publicly against those who attended his trial. This was reported by Associated Press (AP).
“The D.C. Court of Appeals’ decision suspends the gag order to give the justices time to consider Trump’s request for a longer stay on the restrictions pending his appeals,” the court said.
The court also emphasized that the postponement of the decision cannot be interpreted as a “decision on the merits” of Trump’s statement. The former US President’s lawyer did not comment to reporters on the situation.
The gag order prevented Trump from speaking out against court officials, prosecutors and witnesses in the case. At the same time, the politician retained the opportunity to declare his innocence and the political bias of the case.
In the summer of 2023, Trump was indicted in several criminal cases, including the attempted attack on the Capitol in January 2021, the 2020 election, and the illegal retention of documents. The politician denies guilt in each case and calls the investigations political persecution by current President Joe Biden’s administration.
Previously to Trump was threatened imprisonment for violating a court order.
