Scientists from Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences in Iran said that weakness and fatigue after a night’s sleep may be a symptom of anxiety and depressive disorders. Research results published on ScienceDirect.
Some people experience fatigue, decreased concentration, and apathy after a long night’s sleep, even though the person’s body and brain are rested. This phenomenon is called paradoxical insomnia. If you get enough rest, you’ll feel like you haven’t slept all night. People suffering from paradoxical insomnia can remember details of their surroundings at night with the accuracy of someone awake. In addition, a person with such a pathology is able to remember what he thought “in his dream”.
The exact cause of paradoxical insomnia has not yet been determined. Iranian scientists suggest that an adverse sleep environment (bright lights, noise) and caffeine consumption may trigger this condition. In addition, paradoxical insomnia can occur as a result of mental illnesses – anxiety and depressive disorders. These diseases may be accompanied by excessive activation of the nervous system. Anxiety and depression can trigger overproduction of the stress hormone cortisol. Additionally, patients with such disorders may experience obsessive thoughts. Collectively, such changes can lead to disturbances in a person’s circadian rhythms.
Scientists recommend creating a comfortable atmosphere for sleep, turning off the lights, eliminating sources of extraneous noise and avoiding drinking alcohol and coffee. Researchers also emphasized the importance of cognitive behavioral therapy. It is based on overcoming cognitive distortions (e.g. thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes) and improving emotional self-regulation. If paradoxical symptoms of insomnia occur, it is recommended to consult a general physician and, if necessary, a psychotherapist.
Previous scientists I learnedthat a sleepless night can quickly relieve depression.
