Canadian scientists from the Ontario Cancer Research Institute have discovered that smoking not only contributes to the development of cancer, but also weakens the body’s defenses, making their treatment more difficult. The study was published in the scientific journal magazine Science Developments.

The team analyzed DNA from more than 12,000 tumor samples from 18 different types of cancer. The analysis showed a clear link between mutations in lung cancer and the signature “trace” left by smoking on DNA.

Experts concluded that breathing tobacco smoke causes harmful changes in DNA, known as growth-stopping mutations. These changes tell the body to stop producing proteins that are important for fighting tumors.

“Our study showed that smoking is associated with changes in DNA that disrupt the formation of repressors [подавителей] tumors,” said study co-author Nina Adler.

Scientists have also found that unhealthy diet and alcohol consumption also block DNA, making cancer treatment more difficult.
